Accordingly, the Redeemer’s Alchemist Stone and (regular) Alchemist Stone are likely ranked much higher than their typical benefit to most players (as priests should not have to consistently chain-chug mana potions). The likely ranking for the Alchemy Stones’ typical use is 6/8, which would make the top trinkets: 1. Glimmering Naaru Sliver, 2. Memento of Tyrande, 3. Earring of Soulful Meditation.

Set Bonuses:

You need to know how much a set bonus is worth in order to determine whether breaking a set is worth the upgrade. Here are the average set bonus values for raiding healing priests (stats based on weights determined in the previous post on weighing stats).

Finding Upgrades:

If an item has a higher score, it is considered to be better in general, or an “upgrade.” Here is an example of how you would use the scores to determine better gear (with a set bonus factored in):

Example #1:
You are thinking about breaking your Primal Mooncloth Set. You have Robes of Heavenly Purpose from ZA (score: 75.75) and Mantle of the Avatar (score: 52.26). The Primal Mooncloth Set bonus, on average, is worth 26.60. The Primal Mooncloth Robe is scored as 66.72 and the Primal Mooncloth Shoulders is scored as 42.24.

PMC:
Robe + Shoulders + Set Bonus =
79.24 + 49.75 + 26.60 = 155.59

Possible Upgrade Set:
Robes of Heavenly Purpose + T5 Shoulders
89.20 + 61.94 = 151.14

The Primal Mooncloth pieces (just barely) work out to be better in this situation.

Example #2:
Let’s use the same gear, but now say that the Avatar shoulders would give you the two-piece set bonus for its set:

PMC:
Robe + Shoulders + Set Bonus =
76.07 + 46.99 + 26.60 = 149.66

Possible Upgrade Set:
Robes of Heavenly Purpose + T5 Shoulders + T5 Set Bonus
89.20 + 61.94 + 45.80 = 196.94

The Robes of Heavenly Purpose plus the Mantle of the Avatar work out to be much better in this situation.

Always use some common sense though when looking for upgrades. If your mana regen is fine, but you are lacking in healing power (+heal) or stamina, sacrificing a little to round out your stats is fine. In the situation in the first example, the stamina gain might be necessary to survive encounters. It doesn’t matter what your mana regen is if you are dead.

Feel free to use the stat weights from the formula used for “scoring” the gear (see below) to plug into a site like LootRank.com to create your own gear lists or to find items to augment areas you are weak in. Gearing is a balancing act!

In short: Common sense is your friend. Gear how you feel comfortable. These lists are just suggestions.

About This Gear List:

This listing was created using a scoring system that put the stat values of all the gear through a formula to determine the value (“score”) of each item; items were then ranked according to their scores.

Score =
0.65*(spirit) + 0.51*(int) + 1.00*(mp5) + 0.27*(+heal) + 0.06*(spell crit) + 0.10*(spell haste)

Given differences in playstyles, % time in FSR, raid make-up, gear level, racial bonuses, encounter-specific requirements, etc., this formula cannot account for all holy priest gearing needs. It works off of averages. Assumptions had to be made about the talents of the priest, buffs, gems, spell use, etc. Priests with good gear, or who are the race “human,” should weigh spirit a little higher. Intellect, practically speaking, varies as well. Priests lacking in healing power should weigh +heal a higher. And so on…

Some encounters require specific gearing needs (shadow resist, higher stamina, extra haste, etc.). This list certainly doesn’t account for those scenarios. Stamina isn’t taken into consideration at all as it doesn’t directly affect your healing power (though it does indirectly, as a dead priest makes a poor healer :) ). Gear to maximize your healing potential. Hold onto high(er) stamina items to swap in as necessary. If you find yourself light on stamina in general, look for gear perhaps rated slightly lower to use; don’t ever gem for stamina (in PvE)!

Example: Hamard’s Leg Wraps are ranked slightly higher than Hallowed Trousers, but Hallowed Trousers give you 25 more stamina. If you are light on health, they’d make the better choice despite being ranked lower.

One thing that may be difficult to digest is the presence of some blue (rare) items, or even the occasional green (uncommon) item, interspersed in these lists of purples (epics). Repeat after me: THE COLOR PURPLE IS A LIE! There are some blue, and yes, even green items, that have some quality stats on them. Just because an item’s name is in purple text doesn’t automatically make it better. Plus, the new mana regen model introduced in patch 2.4 was created after many of these items were, and their stats were not adjusted to fall in line with it.

Please note! These gear lists are not fully inclusive.

  • DPS gear with healing equivalents (Soul-Collar of the Incarnate, the T4 DPS priest helm, for example) are not taken into account unless ranked higher than their healing counterparts.
  • Only the higher ranked item appears on the list in situations where a quest would grant two items that fell onto the list for the same slot.
  • “Old World” raiding gear is not taken into consideration.

    Quick question as someone who hasn’t been keeping up with all the 2.4 news. I notice changes from your original casual gear list e.g on the shoulder slots the Primal Mooncloth Shoulders are now below the Pauldrons of the Solace-Giver from Curator. I’m assuming this is due to changes in the mana regen model?

  3. Yes, the new mana regen formula really changes things a lot. Some pretty interesting items moved way up the list, Conversely, some things that were considered very good before have now fallen off of it.

  8. I can’t see how Hallowed Crown is better then Headdress of the High Potentate (55.25). HC starts at 39.71 and, following your gem guide Insightful Earthstorm Diamond adds 6.12, Imperial Tanzanite adds 4.91, and the socket bonus adds 2.56 for a total of 53.3, not 62.87.

    As I finish this post, I realize the proc of the diamond is worth about 10mp5 so that must be the difference. I’ll make this post anyway in case anybody else is wondering.

  9. I had to make some assumptions about gem choices in order to make the list. I figured an Insighful Earthstorm Diamond for the meta gems and most of the other gems were spirit/+heal, spirit, or intellect. I included the proc on the Insightful Earthstorm Diamond, too. That is likely the difference you are finding.

  26. There will never exist a simple equation to flawlessly rank all gear for you. Never. There will occasionally be a fluke item that will rank highly despite not even remotely resembling something you would want to wear. We have primary stats, and secondary stats. If an item has a ton of secondary ones, but it lacking in primary ones, the formula doesn’t understand that. It just computes an overall score based on values. I have considered remixing the formula in the future, scaling down an item’s score if it is too lacking in “primary” stats, making the overall equation more accurate, but more complicated.

    About Shadowvine Cloak of Infusion (#5) … would I wear it over Shroud of the Highborne for Illidan (#7)? No. It is obviously one of those aforementioned flukes in the system. Some level of common sense needs to be exercised when thinking about gearing (it also doesn’t help that there are not a lot of healing cloaks out there).

    Other factors that affect this system (and the strangely high ranking of that cloak): I had to average out stat values across all levels of raiding, leading to a slightly lower value placed on haste and heal than most people in T6 content would like. And keep in mind, stamina isn’t even factored in.

    As of patch 3.0 and WOLTK I’m having some major difficulties trying to figure out the spell power vs,. spirit vs. mp5. If you could update this, that’d be amazing, I’m sure its a LOT of work, but it helps a lot of people :)
