Healing Trinkets: Then and Now

There is quite the array of healing trinkets out there and selection can be quite tedious. Given the changes in how spirit and intellect affect mana regen in patch 2.4, and the addition of new trinkets, we are going to have to revisit which trinkets are the best for us healer-priests.

But first, let me just say that when raiding you should carry multiple trinkets with you and select from them based on your needs for the given encounter.

Wait, that was important! Let me just say that one more time:
You should carry multiple trinkets and select based on your needs for the given encounter.

You should use trinkets to supplement the areas you are weak on (mana regen, stats, or raw +heal) or to give you an edge in a given encounter (such as using the PvP Insignia on Rage Winterchill or Archimonde). Ranking trinkets all on one scale is oversimplifying the selection process. Depending on your play style, your gear, or the encounter’s requirements, you will likely select different trinkets than what is listed as “best” on this scale. That is okay! These listings are just for a general overview.

The Trinkets:

These 23 healing trinkets are listed alphabetically and are ranked below. “Effective Stats” refers to overall benefit of the trinket if utilized to its maximum potential. When the benefits of the trinket depended on the pre-existing stats of the priest, I assumed average raiding priest stats plus raid buffs.

PPM = Procs per minute

Alchemist’s Stone

  • From: Alchemy – BoP
  • Stats: +15 all stats. Increases the effects of healing and mana potions by 40%.
  • Effective Stats: 15 int, spirit, and stam. About 39mp5.
  • Best Use: In fights when you have to potion a lot. The mp5 gain from this trinket scales with how frequently you use mana potions.
  • Rank in 2.3: 2
  • Rank in 2.4: 3

Ashtongue Talisman of Acumen

  • From: Ashtongue Deathsworn faction – exalted
  • Stats: Each time your Renew heals, it has a 10% chance to grant you 220 +heal for 5 sec.
  • Effective Stats: At 2 ppm, this gives 37 +heal.
  • Best Use: Only if you have nothing else even remotely better. This trinket really isn’t that good for healing.
  • Rank in 2.3: 18
  • Rank in 2.4: 22

Bangle of Endless Blessings

  • From: Botanica – Warp Splinter
  • Stats: Your spell casts have a chance to allow 15% of your mana regeneration to continue while casting for 15 sec. Use: Increases your Spirit by 130 for 20 sec. (2 min cooldown)
  • Effective Stats: ~22 extra spirit from the “use” effect. About 65 mp5 every proc (~1 PPM), or 16 mp5 overall.
  • Best Use: This trinket is great if you know you will be innervated (due to the “Use” effect).
  • Rank in 2.3: 9
  • Rank in 2.4: 10

Battlemaster’s Perseverance

  • From: 75 Badges of Justice
  • Stats: Increases healing done by up to 88. Use: Increases maximum health by 1750 for 15 sec. (3 min cooldown)
  • Effective Stats: 88 +heal. The health gain isn’t typically useful when raiding.
  • Best Use: In PvP, or if you need a +heal heavy trinket and are short on options.
  • Rank in 2.3: 15
  • Rank in 2.4: 19

Darkmoon Card: Blue Dragon

  • From: Darkmoon Faire – Beast Deck turn-in
  • Stats: 2% chance on successful spellcast to allow 100% of your mana regen to continue while casting for 15 sec.
  • Effective Stats: ~37 mp5
  • Math: You have an average of 51% regen in general (70% in FSR * 30% regen + 30% OOFSR * 100% regen = 51%). The trinket cannot increase your regen above 100%, so it provides an average bonus of 49% regen for 15 seconds.
  • Best Use: This has some synergy with trinkets that increase your intellect or spirit on demand (such as the Earring of Soulful Meditation).
  • Rank in 2.3: 4
  • Rank in 2.4: 7

Earring of Soulful Meditation

  • From: SSC – The Lurker Below

  • Rank in 2.3: 1
  • Rank in 2.4: 1

Essence of the Martyr

  • From: 41 Badges of Justice
  • Stats: Increases +heal by 84. Use: Increases +healing by 297 for 20 sec. (2 Min Cooldown)
  • Effective Stats: 134 +heal
  • Best Use: When you need to augment your +heal.
  • Rank in 2.3: 7
  • Rank in 2.4: 13

Eye of Gruul

  • From: Gruul’s Lair – Gruul the Dragonkiller
  • Stats: Increases +heal by 44. Equip: Each healing spell you cast has a 2% chance to make your next heal cast within 15 sec cost 450 less mana.
  • Effective Stats: 44 +heal, 15 mp5
  • Best Use: When you are downranking heavily or casting Renew/PoM/CoH, this can drop you out of the five second rule. It has a chance to trigger per heal, so fights with heavy use of PoM and CoH benefit more from this trinket.
  • Rank in 2.3: 10
  • Rank in 2.4: 15

Ranking Them:

We need to use stat weights to compare these trinkets. Here is what was previously derived:

Patch 2.3:
0.35 spirit / 0.20 int / 1 mp5 /
0.19 +heal / 0.06 spell crit / 0.03 spell haste

Patch 2.4:
0.64 spirit / 0.51 int / 1 mp5
0.19 +heal / 0.06 spell crit / 0.03 spell haste

We use these weights to give each trinket a score, then we rank them from highest score to lowest score.

Example: Item #1 has 40 + heal and 12 mp5. Item #2 has 75 +heal. Which is better? From the derived stat weights, 1 +heal is worth 0.19. 1 mp5 is worth 1. Item#1 has a score of 0.19*40 + 12*1 = 19.6. Item #2 has a score of 0.19*75 = 14.25. Item #1 has a higher score, and is therefore ranked as “better.”

  1. Thank you,

Very good read, you always seem to deliver.

I’m sitting at 2100 healing at the moment and had taken a look at some of the new trinkets in 2.4

I still need my earrings of soulful meditation, and am crafting an alchemists stone to upgrade in 2.4, this just quantifies my need for those two items even more.

  4. Great list … thanks for the info!

I’m just wondering if the spirit from the use effect on the bangle and earring might be a little undervalued. If you can arrange to use the trinket when you can get a stretch of time outside the FSR (by timing it with clearcast, inner focus, etc), you’re better off. You’d still be about 70% inside the FSR overall, but for the times the trinket is active, you’d be outside the FSR more, so the spirit would be more valuable than for a trinket with a constant +spirit (like the alchemist one). I’m trying to sort out the choices between burst regen trinkets and constant regen ones. Any thoughts?
