Happy Patch Day!

The servers will be going down in a few short hours for patch 3.0.2: Echoes of Doom!

  • The above guide only concerns itself with patch 3.0.2. I’ll make a separate guide for WotLK that has leveling specs, etc.  I’m also working on gear lists and a few other goodies.

Hopefully there won’t be too many nasty surprises when the patch goes live in a few hours … and hopefully there will be some fun event (similar to the Scourge Invasion, or the opening of the Dark Portal).

I’ve been stressing a bit about getting my add-ons ready for the patch. Admittedly, I haven’t actually done much with them thus far.  I’ve been randomly pulling random stuff off of WowInterface (which, by the way, has its own add-on-updater tool) and testing out various add-ons.

I’ve put together something that looks like this:

And in combat:

I took some inspiration from Beska’s UI.  I’m not really digging where I was going with it, though (I can never find a good way to handle debuffs, or the combat log for that matter).  I may scrap it and start over again from scratch.  Messing with my UI and trying out new add-ons is something I really enjoy doing. Heck, I already found a better tool tip mod than CowTip (in the screenshot) with TipTop. Not that there was anything really wrong with CowTip; I just didn’t need the million customization options it gave me.

If you find any cool, new add-ons, let me know!

The list of things I need to do this patch just keeps growing: find add-ons, set keybindings, clear out quest logs, make new talent specs for all my characters… etc.  It’s enough to keep me busy and out of trouble for a while.  :) Thankfully there isn’t a lot of raiding going on right now.

  1. Wow! A part from the coloring of your bars and a few minor details, that is my UI in a nutshell :O

Yeah, I am hoping that my addons will have a peaceful move over to 3.0.2 …

  2. I love minimalistic UIs! Still feel mine is a bit too cluttered at times. Yours/Beska’s looks very neat. Really liking the font for the scrolling combat text. I’ll have to steal some ideas when I revamp next time :P Couldn’t agree more about CowTip, I can barely remember all the options and customisations, so thank you for linking TipTop.

I can’t even begin to imagine how many errors and nonfunctional addons I’ll be greeted by. Good thing is it’ll more or less force me to delete what’s superfluous and not etc.

  3. Yea, great UI. Are you using Pitbull for the unit frames? If so, I’m going to have to figure out how to get the name text like you have it. That’s pretty snazzy. What about the timers too, which addon is that? Maybe I’ll just download Beska’s and mess around with it. Minimal is the way to go.

  4. For whatever it’s worth, below is the stable list of addons I am using having started the game in early August (i.e. no legacy stuff there really). I am sure you know all of them already, but it will make my day if there is something there you don’t know/use ;) Please note, the list is utility, rather than eye candy focused, and do not have any standard GUI elements on screen.

Auctioneer (who gold sellers when you have this?)
    Bagnon (one large bank/bag)
Bartender4 (action bars for custom hot keys)
BetterInbox (dealing with all auction-related mail is a blast)
    Butsu (better loot UI)
    Cartographer (better maps)
    ElkBuffBars (best buffs/debuffs layout)
    Gatherer (for Alchemy)
LightHeaded (WowHead quest info in game—levelling)
MinimapButtonFrame (hide those annoying mmap buttons)
oGlow (see item colour green/blue/etc in your bags)
    Omen (threat meter)
    OmniCC (textual countdown on buttons)
PhanxChart (better chat and less bloat than alternative)
    Quartz (best caster bar)
    QuestGuru (better quest log)
QuestHelper (powerlevelling in game, great “crazy taxi” arrow integration with Cartographer, memory hog though)
    RatingBuster (tooltip)
RicoMiniMap (for that neat square minimap at my lower left corner)
    ScrollingCombatText (name says it all)
SellOMatic (sell all gray trash with single button press)
TitanPanel (I prefer it to FuBar, called me contrarian)
XPerlUnitFrames (Perfect balance of usability and configurability)

Thanks again for my favourite priest blog!

  5. I love both the minimalist design shown by yours and Beska’s UI. Its inspired me to seek something similar, however do you know whether the current Beska download is patch 3 compatible?

  6. The timers are Quartz.

    I don’t think Beska’s is 3.0.2. compatible yet.
